Orange County Heritage Day: Becoming Florida
On January 23, the History Center continues its annual tradition of celebrating our county’s official beginnings with free admission and fun activities for the whole family, adding a special theme for 2021: “Becoming Florida.”
This year they’ll honor the county’s 176th birthday, hailing the January day in 1845 when the Florida Legislature had the good sense to name what had been Mosquito County after a beautiful citrus fruit instead of a pesky insect.
The Orange County Regional History Center has even more heritage to celebrate in 2021. It’s the bicentennial year of Florida’s becoming part of the United States in 1821 – a major milestone in a long past shaped by a rich tapestry of people and cultures. During 2021, the History Center will explore the historical Floridians who created the state we know today, through a variety of “Becoming Florida” programs. The History Center begins in January with their special 2021 edition of Orange County Heritage Day. Please join them!
