Opera Orlando presents Carmen
Opera Orlando concludes its fifth anniversary season on the MainStage with the curtain rising in the Walt Disney Theater. Be there as Opera Orlando presents Georges Bizet’s fiery masterwork Carmen.
Carmen captivates from the opening notes of its ever-popular overture, to Carmen’s sultry and vivacious “Habanera” and “Seguidilla”, to Escamillo’s rousing Toreador song, and finally to Don Jose’s beautifully tragic “Flower Song”. The opera is one hit after the next featuring musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of critically-acclaimed maestro Kelly Kuo, making his Opera Orlando debut. Stage director Sara E. Widzer also makes her Opera Orlando debut with this original production, setting Carmen in the politically tumultuous and culturally provocative arena of 1960s Haiti.
Mezzo-soprano Brianna Hunter, described as “radiant” by The New York Times, and as “a mesmerizing Carmen” by Opera News, takes on the title role in her Orlando debut. Also making his Company debut, tenor Nathan Grannar from the Sony Masterworks “The American Tenors” vocal trio joins her as the tragic Don Jose. The Metropolitan Opera soprano Brittany Renee Robinson returns to Orlando to sing Michaela, and Broadway and opera veteran Gregg Baker makes his Opera Orlando MainStage debut as Zuniga. The seductive and treacherous world of Carmen and Haiti in the 1960s comes to life with members of the Opera Orlando Chorus and Youth Company rounding out the cast onstage at the Walt Disney Theater.
Carmen is presented in partnership with the Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Orlando. It will be sung in French with Creole-infused French dialogue and English supertitles. Estimated run time is three hours with one intermission.
