Lunch & Learn: Carving His Own Destiny – The Life and Legacy of Albin

The History Center’s collections manager, Emily Coughlan, will reveal the story of an extraordinary artist who has become part of Central Florida’s landscape, Albin Polasek. In 1901, Polasek made his way to the United States from what’s now the Czech Republic, where he was born in 1879. He dedicated himself to art and became a world-renowned and sought-after sculptor. He won the coveted Prix de Rome fellowship at the American Academy in Rome and led the sculpture department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he taught for nearly 30 years. After retiring to Winter Park, he started the Albin Polasek Foundation. His legacy lives on today through the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens in Winter Park.
