What is impressionism?
Considered the first modern movement in painting, impressionism can be traced to the 1860s—when new, vibrant synthetic colors and the invention of paint tubes allowed artists to paint outside. They wanted to depict a specific moment in time by capturing the whole atmosphere—moving clouds, a ray of sun, sudden rainfall and natural light. Their goal was to make you see what they saw.

The style shook the art world to its roots. Critics said the works seemed unfinished—they were just “impressions.” But over time, impressionism became widely accepted as the way to present modern life.
