Discover Downtown: Black History Month Pop-Up Shop

Celebrate the start of Black History Month at Discover Downtown with a pop-up shop event on Friday, January 22 from 11 am to 3 pm.

Joining us as a vendor and speaking about her book, Black America Series: Orlando, FL, and contributions to the community and life in politics will be Representative Geraldine Thompson. The speaking portion of the event will begin at noon with a Q&A afterwards. Attendees may attend virtually by clicking here.

Black America Series: Orlando, FL

Geraldine Thompson is an author and Representative to the 44th District of the Florida House of Representatives. Thompson’s professional experience includes founding The Association to Preserve African American Society, History and Tradition (known as Past Inc.) and has worked as an assistant to the President of Valencia Community College and a teacher in Orange County Public Schools. The organization Past Inc. was also instrumental in renovating the Wells’Built Hotel and remodeling it into the Wells’Built Museum. Her book, Black America Series: Orlando, FL, illuminates the lives and accomplishments of African Americans in one of the Central Florida’s largest cities. Images from the late 1800s to the mid-1980s depict schools, churches, businesses, housing developments, prominent homes, celebrations, and significant personalities in Orlando's black community. This volume guides readers through more than 150 years of remarkable history.

Founded by Tronaye Jones

Raided was founded in 2018 by Tronaye Jones, and is proud to offer high quality, unique streetwear. Tronaye started Raided as a hobby, and through passion, took on doing everything with the mindset to RAID ALL OBSTACLES. This meant taking on all aspects of Raided Clothing, such as creating, learning, financing, investing, managing customer service, social media, photography, editing, marketing, packaging and shipping while living and managing a personal life. This work ethic and balance drives the mission behind Raided, which is to inspire the mindset that any and every one can do whatever they put their mind to. Regardless of the obstacle, Tronaye Jones believes to always strive for greatness and keep going strong.

 

Issues Without Tissues

Dr. Cassandra Williams-Kelly is an ordained minister and spiritual counselor who was inspired to write Issues Without Tissues from her own personal struggles and how she overcame them. These struggles also influence Dr. Williams-Kelly’s passion for advocating for victims of domestic violence. On a spiritual journey in pursuit of God and commissioned to her faith, Dr. Williams-Kelly has traveled the world sharing her love for God’s people. Guiding her through any major crisis or issue that Dr. Williams-Kelly didn’t have control over, she refers back to Proverbs 4:23: “Keep thy heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life.” Dr. William’s-Kelly has also published Wisdom Is She and is working on several more inspirational books.
