Brechner Lecture Series – Play All Night! Duane Allman and the Journey
Join historian Bob Beatty to dive deep into the motivations and musical background of Allman Brothers Band founder Duane Allman to tell the story the band’s 1971 album At Fillmore East, one of the most important live rock albums in history. Beatty’s recently published book, Play All Night!, has been hailed as the biography of a musical vision and the ways in which the band brought that vision to life.
A self-described music obsessive, author Bob Beatty grew up devouring his mom’s Beatles’ and dad’s Hank Williams and bluegrass records. His experiences as a historian, fan, and musician are interwoven with his love of punk rock, the Allman Brothers Band, and the Jam Depression collective. His career includes more than 25 years’ work in nonprofits and museums (including the Orange County Regional History Center) in leadership roles before he founded the Lyndhurst Group, a nonprofit consulting firm, in 2016. As a public historian, guitar player, storyteller, and family man, he aims his focus on what brings people together as a community.
The Brechner Speaker Series honors the late Joseph L. Brechner, a longtime journalist, Central Florida community leader, and television pioneer who is also remembered as one of Orlando’s first clear public voices for civil rights.
