Premier spoken word poets from around the country gather together for a special night celebrating Black History Month. From the cultural expression of Langston Hughes to the Beat Poets of the 1950s to modern rap and hip-hop music, performance poetry follows the trend of rhythmic engagement with listeners. As the name suggests, performance poems are meant to be spoken aloud with expression and movement that reflect their meaning. This year’s program will feature nationally acclaimed poet from South Carolina, Dove Dupree who was 2023’s Blackberry Peach National Poetry Slam winner! And a new Black History Month production in poetry and song titled “Melodies of History” curated by Aretha Rodney! The evening concludes a week-long spoken word residency of performance poetry workshops facilitated by Orlando’s Poet Laureate, Shawn Welcome in three Orange County high schools—Jones, Evans and Oak Ridge. Emerging poets who participated in the workshops will also be performing.
