A Knight of Opera: "Carmenella" and Opera Scenes
Opera students perform the children’s opera Carmenella with music by Georges Bizet and words by Denise Page Caraher. The stepsisters are gang members, the ball is a bullfight, the Prince is a toreador and Fairy Godmother is the Hairy Godmother. The stepsisters finally figure out that violence is a no-win proposition and everyone realizes that being yourself and trying to make a positive difference for others makes for a happy ending. The show includes rock and roll parodies – the Hairy Godmother sings Why Be That Way?, The Village People’s hit, YMCA and the bull sings George Thoroughgood’s Bad to the Bone. The second half of the program will include scenes from famous operas such as Gounod’s Faust, Verdi’s La Forza Del Destino, Menotti’s The Old Man and the Thief, Massenet’s Werther, and more!
